What is a HiFi pre-amplifier?

The role of the pre-amplifier is to add gain on the input line signal and pass this to the HiFi Power Amplifier.

In addition to this, the preamplifier also allows the adjustment of listening volume and may enable control of the tone controls (treble, bass, loudness, equalization) and the selection of audio sources. Many Pre-amplifiers include headphone amplifiers.

Factors to Consider when selecting a Pre-Amplifier is to verify that the model is equipped with a sufficient number of audio inputs to meet your needs.
Does the Pre-Amplifier have the number of inputs suitable for connecting all the Hi Fi components of your stereo system?

Are there a suitable number of audio outputs?

Will I need specific functions, such as sound equalisation functions?
Is the gain level suitable for the audio sources you are going to connect?
Will the output impedance match well with your power amplifier?

Typically offering better performance due to the benefit of dedicated design, separate power supplies, additional control and various other features. The Pre-Amplifier connects to your source providing the volume and source selection within the power amplifier powering the speakers.

Valve amplifiers offer an amazingly  warm rich sound, with varying sounds influenced on the type of valve used. These were typically used during the 60’s & 70’s, but have regained in popular appeal due to the tonal charecteristics of warmth, richness and neutrality.
